Thames and Kosmos Chemistry Chem C500

CHEM C500 takes you on an introductory tour through seven central areas in chemistry with more than 30 classic experiments. Learn about reactions between solids, liquids, and gases. Discover the colorful effects of acids and bases. Perform astonishing “magic” tricks for your friends.

Investigate metals and salts in electrochemical experiments with a 9-volt battery (not included). Learn for yourself how chemistry goes far beyond textbooks and laboratories, to explain occurrences that happen around us every day. The 32-page, full-color experiment manual gives simple instructions for setting up and performing each experiment, and then clear explanations of what happened and why.

This kit is ideal for children who are interested in chemistry but who are not yet ready for a more advanced chemistry set. It serves as an excellent introduction to the other kits in our CHEM line. Ages 8 and up.

For those familiar with our CHEM C101 kit, this kit is similar in concept, and has been considerably improved. New parts have been added to the kit to make the experiments safer and easier. The manual has been completely overhauled and the box has been redesigned.

Space Needle 1961, Taken from Kerry Park , Queen Ann Hill

Space Needle 1961, Taken from Kerry Park , Queen Ann Hill

Space Needle under construction. Old Seattle 1961. Picture taken from Kerry Park, Queen Ann Hill. The proposed Space Needle had no land on which to be built. Since it was not financed by the city, land had to be purchased that was within the fairgrounds. It was thought that there would be no land available to build a tower and the search for one was nearly dead when in 1961, a 120 foot by 120 foot (37-by-37 m) plot that contained switching equipment for the fire and police alarm systems was discovered and sold to the investors for $75,000. At this point, only one year remained before the World's Fair would begin.
It was privately built and financed by the "Pentagram Corporation" which consisted of Bagley Wright, contractor Howard S. Wright, architect John Graham, Ned Skinner, and Norton Clapp. In 1977 Bagley, Skinner and Clapp sold their interest to Howard Wright who now controls it under the name of Space Needle Corporation.[10]
The earthquake stability of the Space Needle was ensured when a hole was dug 30 feet (10 m) deep and 120 feet (40 m) across, and 467 concrete trucks took one full day to fill it. The foundation weighs almost 6,000 tons and there are 250 tons of reinforcing steel in the base. With this concrete base weighing the same as the above-ground structure, the Needle's center of gravity is just 5 feet (1.5 m) above ground level. The structure is bolted to the foundation with 72 bolts, each one 30 feet (10 m) long.
With time an issue, the construction team worked around the clock. The top dome housing the top five levels (including the restaurants and observation deck) was perfectly balanced so that the restaurant could rotate with the help of one tiny electric motor, originally 1 hp (0.8 kW), later replaced with a 1.5 hp (1.1 kW) motor. With paint colors named Orbital Olive for the body, Astronaut White for the legs, Re-entry Red for the saucer, and Galaxy Gold for the roof, the Space Needle was finished in less than one year. It was completed in April 1962 at a cost of $4.5 million. The last elevator car was installed the day before the Fair opened on April 21. During the course of the Fair nearly 20,000 people a day rode the elevators to the Observation Deck. The 20,000 mark was never reached, missed by fewer than 50 people one day. At the time of construction, it was the tallest building in the West, taking the title from the Smith Tower across town that had held that title since 1914.

Day 323 - Uphill Battle

Day 323 - Uphill Battle

A lot is going right now. Had dim sum at Emperor's Palace with Team Dimsum (the restaurant is nice, but not all that great for the price, and the service...well it's lacking for now).

Followed that up with some bubble tea but also, on a whim decided to skip overtime and go take photos. Winter is kind of a rough time to take photos. I mean, it's slippery (and I'm holding $4000 worth of photo equipment in my hands), it's cold (and outside the "normal operating temperature" of cameras), and it's all white (making it really easy to overexpose all the highlights).

Nonetheless, I knew I wouldn't get better without taking more photos. While I like taking landscape photos, it gets boring if you're just taking photos of home. Maybe a better photographer would be able to take something amazing from their hometown, but I feel like my creativity is fed directly from my own wanderlust. The further away I am from home, the better the photos I take. I can't confirm whether or not this is causality or correlation, it might be neither, but I use it as an excuse to say "I need a vacation."

Loving the use of Adobe Lightroom 3. I'm trialing the software right now and I'm really liking what it can do with RAWs. I guess what I mean to say is, I've been limping along with Digital Photo Professional to process RAWs since the new Canon 5D Mark II and Canon S90 use a new format for RAW that the old software couldn't handle it. Suffice it to say, Digital Photo Professional is really not all that great :P

In fact, when I find more time, I think I'm going to go through some old RAWs, in addition to all the ones that I still need to get done from before.

But this photo represents the next year. There remains to be a LOT of work ahead of me.

At Work: a Professional Practice Exam in 6 weeks, a P.Eng designation in September, a special project at work, and a lot more responsibility.

In Life: Photography backlog. Joanne's Anniversary Present. World of Warcraft. Working Out.

Everything Else: Finances Finances Finances.

Nonetheless, it is time to get it done. I'm excited - 2011 is shaping up to be a very productive year, whether I like it or not.

Parc de la Barceloneta

Parc de la Barceloneta

El parc de la Barceloneta esta organitzat en tres grans arees: la primera, construida al voltant del que resta d'un antic diposit de gas, es un espai
obert que comunica el passeig Maritim amb el carrer del Doctor Aiguader;

The Parc de la Barceloneta is organised into three major areas: the first, built around what's left of an old gas tank, is an open space that connects the Passeig Maritim with Carrer Doctor Aiguader; the second is made up of large slopes separated by paved walkways; and the third is occupied by a football field.
Curved lines are predominant in the park, both in the walkways and in the park's perimeter and the grassy slopes and parterres. Taken as a whole, this gives the space a very smooth effect, and it continues to expand as you move towards the beach, the beginning or the end of the park, depending on where you have entered.

The architects who authored the project, Jordi Henrich and Olga Tarraso, knew how to take advantage of the elements from the old gas industry that was in operation in this space until 1989. Thus, the laminated steel gasometer structure designed by the engineer Claudi Gil Serra in 1868 has been preserved, as has the water tower designed by the modernist architect Josep Domenech i Estapa and built in 1905.
The third element that has been preserved is the old gasworks, which is found at the park's entrance on Carrer Salvat Papasseit. Like the water tower, it was designed by Josep Domenech i Estapa, and it was built in 1907 to house the old Catalana de Gas' head offices.
This building is currently home to the Fabrica del Sol, the headquarters of the Resource Centre for a Sustainable Barcelona, and the facilities are dedicated to environmental education.
Next to this building there is a monument facing the sea dedicated to Simon Bolivar. It is a sculpture created by Julio Maragall that was financed by the Catalan colony of Venezuela in 1996.
The Parc de la Barceloneta is on land formerly occupied by the old Catalana de Gas factory, which was torn down in 1989. Some elements from the factory have been preserved and commemorate one of Barcelona's industrial specialisations during the 19th century: gas.

Title: Collision with overpass, Boeing 757-2S7, Denver, March 1, 1997
Micro summary: This Boeing 757-2S7's vertical stabilizer hit an overpass
Departure: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Destination: Denver International Airport, Denver, Colorado, USA
Airplane Type(s): Boeing 757-2S7
Flight Phase: Taxi
Registration(s): N902AW
Operator(s): America West Airlines
NTSB short summary:

the pilot-in-command's failure to comply with company procedures/directives to not taxi the aircraft beneath the bridge/overpass, and his misjudgment of clearance between the vertical stabilizer and the bridge/overpass.

NTSB synopsis:

The airplane landed on runway 07, and the crew was instructed to contact ramp control. Ramp control, manned by airport personnel (not ATC personnel) instructed the crew to taxi east on taxiway AS to gate A44. The airplane was taxied underneath a pedestrian bridge/overpass (bridge). The airplane's vertical stabilizer struck the bridge. According to the company's procedures/directives, aircraft larger than the Airbus A320 were not to be taxied beneath the bridge, and the crew had been so advised via dispatch papers. In addition, a cautionary note in the airport taxi chart advised that the bridge provided for 40 foot tail and 117 foot wing clearance.

NTSB factual narrative text:

On March 1, 1997, at 2012 mountain standard time, a Boeing 757-2S7, N902AW, owned by Meridian Trust Company of Reading, Pennsylvania, and operated by America West Airlines, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona, sustained minor damage when it struck an overhead bridge while taxiing at Denver, Colorado, International Airport. There were no injuries to the two cockpit crew members, 4 cabin crew members, and 95 passengers. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and an IFR flight plan had been filed. The airplane was being operated as Flight 491, scheduled domestic passenger service, under Title 14 CFR Part 121. The flight originated at Phoenix, Arizona, at 1819 Pacific standard time.

According to the transcript of control tower communications, the airplane landed on runway 07. At 1952:49, as its landing roll was slowing, the crew was instructed to "turn left at (taxiway) bravo four" and to remain on the tower frequency until entering taxiway "alpha sierra, then contact ramp tower contact ramp control." The crew acknowledged. At 1953:08 the tower controller asked, "You don't normally fly a (Boeing) seven five (seven) in here, do you?" The crew did not answer, and there were no further transmissions between Denver control tower and flight 491.

There was a recording equipment malfunction in the B concourse control tower. As a result, only transmissions from the controller were recorded. According to the transcript, the controller instructed "Cactus 491, (taxi via) alpha sierra to the gate (A-44), sir. Be advised that we've got men in vehicles that are working in that area. They should give way to you but if you have any problems with that commute, give me a call back." The B concourse control tower is manned by airport personnel, not FAA air traffic control (ATC) personnel. According to the assistant deputy manager of aviation, most of the personnel are former military or civilian ATC personnel and have been thoroughly trained in ground operations.

To get to gate A-44 via taxiway alpha sierra, the airplane had to pass beneath an overhead bridge connecting the main terminal building and "A" concourse. As the airplane passed beneath the bridge, its vertical stabilizer struck the bridge, crushing the vertical stabilizer cap and rudder.

The following note appears on the Jeppesen taxi chart: "CAUTION: OVERHEAD PASSENGER BRIDGE ON SOUTH SIDE OF CONCOURSE A PROVIDES 40' TAIL AND 117' WINGSPAN CLEARANCE WHEN ON TAXIWAY CENTERLINES." The following America West NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) was contained in the dispatch release and was given to the flight crew: "757 AIRCRAFT EFFECTIVE 1 MARCH, DO NOT TAXI UNDER THE PASSENGER BRIDGE SOUTH SIDE OF CONCOURSE A."

According to the captain's statement, "it appeared that there was more than adequate clearance for the tail of the aircraft, but I became more concerned with the wingtip clearance from the side support of the bridge rather than the tail clearance."

In his statement the controller on duty in the B concourse control tower wrote, "All I could see was the aircraft's lights and told the aircraft to taxi alpha sierra. I was not expecting a (Boeing) 757 on this flight and did not see the aircraft was a 757."

According to an America West spokesman, this was the first time the ai

I always heard about the superb quality of Gitzo equipment, but it was not until I got the Gitzo GT 3350LS that I’ve been absolutely convinced. As a landscape photographer I rely on a sturdy tripod that braves the storm on a windy mountain top or at the stormy coast. For me it was also important to have the possibility to use the tripod in very low positions for details and flowers. As the GT 3350LS has no center column it is perfect to work low on the ground and it further adds to the overall stability as I’m able to mount my ballhead directly onto the cover plate. Although he tripod is quite large it fits perfectly into my travelling bag and it is very comfortable while carrying around as it is light as a feather. The GT 3350LS is the perfect match to my needs – solid, lightweight and of an extremely high built quality. If I would have to buy a new one – it would be exactly the same!
